Recognising that we all need to change the way we produce and consume energy, Make the Future is Shell’s commitment to help build an energy-rich, lower-carbon tomorrow.
Because there’s an undeniable tension between the world’s need for energy and the effect the production and usage of that energy has on the planet. We know that we can play a key role in shaping a lower-carbon future while still helping meet modern energy needs.
Shell Eco-marathon is a global academic programme focused on energy optimisation. It challenges super-talented high school and university students to explore every aspect of design, technology, and engineering to build their own ultra-energy-efficiency cars, and then take them out on the track to compete!
Teams can choose to design and build one of two different car types:
- Urban Concept: vehicles that have familiar road car features (always 4 wheels).
- Prototype: ultra-efficient, lightweight vehicles (generally 3 wheels).
Teams can then choose between three energy categories for their car:
- Internal Combustion Engine (gasoline, diesel or ethanol)
- Battery Electric
- Hydrogen Fuel Cell
The global impacts of COVID-19 have meant that all physical events in 2020 have been cancelled. However, while we can’t gather around a track, we’re delighted to share the latest on the alternative Shell Eco-marathon virtual programme.
