Virtual Technical Inspection
This year’s Technical Inspection took place in a virtual environment, where teams had to remotely and creatively demonstrate their vehicle’s compliance with a selection of technical rules. The score received turned into Virtual League points to the teams!

Shell Eco-marathon Technical Inspection
A series of tests and checks that our students and their vehicles must pass before having the opportunity to head to the track.
The graphic slowly rises towards the top of the frame, revealing a 3D abstract animation. Three Shell Eco-marathon cars, shaded in blue, light grey and yellow are sitting on top of three rotating cogs, of varying heights, shaded in blue, dark grey and yellow.
Each test is to ensure that the Shell Eco-marathon design, technical, and health and safety standards have been met.

The 3D outlined boxes change colour in sequence. This year, Technical Inspection will include a brand new element…Virtual Technical Inspection.
The visual transitions to a birds-eye view of 3D animated scene featuring the abstract cogs and Shell Eco-marathon vehicles. A range of different 3D Shell Eco-marathon vehicles shaded in blue, grey and yellow are situated on a yellow platform, in a circle that surrounds the central visual. The central visual features a series of 3D, rotating cogs. The blue, dark grey and yellow cogs with light grey, yellow and blue Shell Eco-marathon vehicles on top are joined and linked together by white cogs in varying shapes and sizes. A rotating red 3D disc in the centre of the 3D visual. We slowly zoom into the centre of the visual, towards the rotating red 3D disc before fading to black and revealing a grey title on a light grey background. Surround the title are cropped 3D frames in blue, dark grey and yellow. Virtual Technical Inspection
All teams will need to demonstrate their vehicle’s compliance remotely and creatively. From their school, their university or a location of their choosing.
Set within a light grey background, a large version of the red 3D disc is titled at an angle while a Recording symbol and smaller rotating disc permanently sits in the top right corner. A 3D yellow Shell Eco-marathon car is based on this angled red disc, before a series of small 3D yellow dots and lines appear on the disc to demonstrate the length of the vehicle. This visual shrinks and transitions to a box in the far-left centre of the screen.
A second visual shows the same 3D yellow Shell Eco-marathon car on the red 3D disc from a different, closer angle. The grey windscreen slowly rises up, trailed by the small 3D yellow dots. This visual shrinks and transitions to a box in the left centre of the screen.
A third visual shows the same 3D yellow Shell Eco-marathon car on the red 3D disc from a birds-eye view. Small 3D yellow dots starting from both sides of the front of the vehicle then appear in sequence around the red dot in a circular formation. This visual shrinks and transitions to a box in the right centre of the screen.
A fourth visual shows the same 3D yellow Shell Eco-marathon car on the red 3D disc from a side angle. A series of small 3D yellow lines then appear in sequence from the front of the vehicle to the back. This visual shrinks and transitions to a box in the far right centre of the screen.
All four angles of the 3D yellow Shell Eco-marathon car are then shown at once in the same screen.

Set in a light grey background, a large 3D red disc with a 3D yellow Shell Eco-marathon car on top slows rises up the screen on a dark grey podium. Towards the bottom of the screen, 3D white and light grey cogs of various sizes slowly rotate. The 3D red disc and 3D yellow Shell Eco-marathon car slowly rotate, revealing a geometric, 3D yellow ruler along the length of the car from above.
The visual transitions quickly to reveal the corner of a large, yellow 3D number that is rising from the white surface. The view switches to a birds-eye view to reveal the whole of the yellow 3D number which is situated on a white background. The cropped edges of blue and dark grey frames can be seen to the top-left and middle-right of the screen.
…as well as a cash prize for the top 3 teams in each region. It is also a requirement before being able to attend any on-track events.
Set in a light grey background, a 3D circle with yellow outline appears with three 3D curved boxes with light grey, dark grey and blue outlines on the same horizontal line. This pattern is repeated down the screen to reveal a geometric leaderboard. These lines begin to switch and alternate between themselves to suggest moving up and down the leaderboard.
Each team will need to submit 1 video.

Teams will need to showcase their creativity within their submissions. With the freedom to choose the best way to demonstrate that they have passed at least 1 of the 9 different test categories.
A series of 9 boxes, in a 3x3 grid format, appear on a white background. Each box can be identified by a 3D light and dark grey outline. Dark grey text is sitting within each box.

Each of the box outlines switches from light or dark grey to yellow, in sequence starting from the top left through to the bottom right.
For the teams that have participated in Virtual Technical Inspection, they will be eligible to apply for On-Track Shell Eco-marathon competitions where the vehicles will be assessed in-person by our Technical Team.

With Virtual and in-person Technical Inspection complete, teams can now head to the track to compete in the mileage challenge.
The view of the geometric, blue, light grey, dark grey and yellow track switches to a birds-eye view where we see an array of Shell Eco-marathon vehicles moving along the lines. The red-disc in the centre of the geometric track flips and rotates while the cars move around it. We slowly pan outwards, revealing more of the track and more cars in various shapes and colours.
Fade to white and the Shell Pecten appears in the centre of the frame.
