2020 Americas Off-Track Awards

The Off-Track Awards showcase the range of skills that go into each Shell Eco-marathon project and recognise the outstanding achievements of the teams off the track.
On Wednesday, May 6, 2020 the Americas Off-Track winners were announced LIVE and exclusive on Instagram and Twitter. Host Norman Koch, Global General Manager Shell Eco-marathon was joined by an expert panel of judges and a very special guest Joey Logano, Shell-Pennzoil NASCAR Driver from Team Penske to announce the winners.
In 2020 we received 65 submissions across seven categories from 34 teams in seven countries. That’s nearly twice the number as in previous years! The competition was fierce and our judges had a tough time deliberating over the team’s entries. After building a shortlist of the best teams, our panel used scorecards to arrive at a final decision. As in previous years, the winning teams in each category receive USD 3,000, and the recipient of the Road Safety Stipend was awarded USD 500.
Read on for the full list of 2020 Americas Off-Track Award winners.

I want to start off by thanking all of you for your flexibility and understanding as we evolved the Shell Eco-marathon program due to the impact of COVID-19. As the situation keeps evolving, the health and safety of our participants and the organizing teams remains our top priority. Whilst we might not be able to gather around the tracks this year, we have been thinking how to recognize the hard work of our teams. We want to celebrate your amazing innovations you have shown in the Off-Track Award submissions, which are very much worthy of an Awards Ceremony. Roll the titles, please.

A light blue trophy graphic zooms into frame, centred over a darker blue background watermarked with rows of scrolling Eco-marathon related icons, alternate rows scrolling in opposite directions. After pausing at frame centre, the trophy graphic zooms to fill the frame and then dissolves, replaced by white, red and yellow lines that originate at frame centre and shoot out across the frame in various directions. Again, the trophy graphic zooms into frame, animating at frame-right, and title text in shades of red, yellow and white animates at frame-centre. Finally, a broad diagonal yellow line wipes across the frame, marking the transition to video footage of Norman seated in his home. The Awards title text and trophy graphic display briefly at frame centre, before exiting in a shrink animation.

Thanks, Norman. Joey Logano here, 2018 NASCAR Cup Series Champion and driver in the number 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Mustang. I’m coming to you from beautiful Lake Norman. I wish I could be there right now, but I know this is a huge moment. And that is why I put on my best tuxedo. I just want to say congratulations in advance to all the winners of the Off-Track Awards. What an amazing accomplishment. I know this pandemic is affecting all of us in so many different ways. I know I want to get back to the racetrack and ways of normal living that we’re so used to, and I’m sure you guys are as well. So just wanted to say stay safe, stay at home, make sure you wash your hands, and we’ll see you guys soon.

I’m very excited to be on the show today. This was a very competitive category and the judges were very impressed by the winning team’s entry. They had excellent innovative design, research, original execution for ergonomics, aesthetics, choice of materials, technical feasibility and eco-friendliness. The judging panel particularly appreciated the original and well-proportioned styling of the Tech-E. The aesthetic was backed up by the team’s careful attention to detail in strengthening and stiffening the frame, upgrading the powertrain and keeping the driver safe. Yes, this category also was a very difficult job for the judges. This team that won presented a succinct yet comprehensive write-up that documented and described their design process from scale model all the way through to the fully finished vehicle. Their materials selection, standardized components and effective segmentation of end-of-life products supports really the economics of circular design. This team’s innovation has real-world application and proves that higher resource productivity can be commonplace. And the winner of this year’s Shell Eco-marathon Circular Economy Award…
