Recycling
Kalyani (28:10):
Recycling materials is not just advantageous to the environment…
[Text displays]
Advantageous to the environment
Kalyani:
… it’s also very economically effective.
[Text displays]

Kalyani Sudhir Kumar
Team Manager
Kalyani:
What makes Pravega special is that since the inception, we've always explored green and innovative materials.
[Visuals]
Cuts to three-way split-screen of team members working on vehicle, before cutting back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
We've always wanted to implement the concept of circular economy and recycling into our car.

[Visuals and animation]
Ripple transitions to side shot of vehicle.
Kalyani voice-over:
So it's not just about energy efficiency for us.
[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
This time we've built our car entirely from waste materials.
[Visuals]
Cuts to three-way split of vehicle close-ups.

Waste materials
[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
We have not spent a penny on buying materials for our car.
[Visuals and animation]
Ripple transitions to low-angle shot of vehicle being rolled backwards onto a ramp.
[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
We are coming from Kerala. It's one of the most developed states in India. It's a very beautiful state – very highly educated. But one thing it lacks is a proper waste management system.
[Text displays]
Lacks waste management system
Kalyani:
All the garbage, the plastics, the cloth, the tyres, the food waste, et cetera, is all just burned in the backyard or just dumped.
[Text displays]
Garbage burned
Garbage dumped
Kalyani:
And if the government collects it, again, just burnt away. So we wanted to do something about that.
[Visuals]
Cuts to three-way shot of team members posing and celebrating in front of a sign that reads: “We passed Technical Inspection”.
[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
First off, we figured out what materials we'd use for our car.
[Visuals]
Cuts to digital rendering of a plastic, 3D-printed car.
[Text displays]
Plastic 3D print
Kalyani voice-over:
So we thought plastic for the top part, we could 3D print it, and the underbody, we could make a composite out of cloth.
[Visuals]
Cuts to shot of team member working on cloth composite.

[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
We had to devise a strategy to, collect these materials properly.
[Visuals]
Cuts to split screen of materials being collect and a close-up of Kalyani, before cutting to a close-up of the materials.
[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
We campaigned and marketed our collection drive. We went door to door in all of our neighbourhoods to collect this waste.
[Visuals and animation]
Ripple transitions to image of waste being collected, before cutting back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
For the top part, we collected PLA, polylactic acid, plastic, from the garbage.
[Visuals]
Cuts to split-screen shot of plastics being collected and processed. Then cuts to another split-screen of crushed plastic and a close-up of Kalyani.
Kalyani:
And then we crushed it, and we converted them into filaments and then we 3D printed our parts
[Visuals]
Cuts to three-way split of vehicle parts being 3D printed. Then cuts back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
And for the underbody, we used glass fibre…

Kalyani:
… to make a plastic composite.
[Text displays]

Kalyani:
… And we got it tested in an ISO standard facility…

Kalyani voice-over:
… and they said it was good to go to make our car.
[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
The plastic part is entirely biodegradable.
[Visuals and animation]
Ripple transitions to digital rendering of vehicle.
Kalyani voice-over:
If you bury our car it'll maybe take six to seven years, but it'll be entirely a part of the soil afterwards.
[Visuals]
Cuts back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
The cloth composite part, we had to do an additional process with solvents, but once it's done, it's completely biodegradable.
[Visuals]

Kalyani:
In India, where I come from, the most used mode transportation is auto-rickshaws.
[Text displays]
Auto-rickshaws
Kalyani:
So there's millions of auto-rickshaws out there. The material that's covering them is plastic. So if we could use our design, our material into those vehicles, we could save millions of tons of plastic used to make the auto-rickshaws…
[Visuals]
Cuts to three-way split of vehicle running on track, before cutting back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
… so our design is carbon absorbing, it's recycled, it's biodegradable.

Kalyani:
We study in a government supported institution, which means that we use society's money to study. We actually pay less than a hundred US dollars a year
[Visuals and animation]

Kalyani:
So working with Inspire, it's one of the ways we feel like we're paying to our society for what they're giving us.
[Visuals]

Kalyani:
Inspire is an organisation founded by the mechanical engineering seniors of our university.

Kalyani voice-over:
It's an NGO that helps underprivileged students.

Kalyani voice-over:
We reach out to the underprivileged areas in our society and teach them to think about new opportunities in life.

Kalyani voice-over:
A big part of our initiative is to conduct weekly classes for the underprivileged areas or orphanages.

Kalyani:
To make someone think of a new possibility in their life…
[Visuals]
Cuts to image of Inspire teacher talking to students, before cutting back to Kalyani.
Kalyani:
… to help someone get there, and to see them achieve their dreams. it's a very incredible feeling and that's exactly what Inspire’s about.
